Your domain name is the name of the address
where visitors will find your website.
Purchase a domain name that fits the topic of your web site. Try to get one or two key words from the content of your site into the name. If you look at the
first page of most Google searches you will see that a word from your search string will appear in the top domain names. A search for 'earn cash on the net' may find on the first
page of results - www.hillofcash.com/earn.htm
If your chosen name is already taken, try adding an 's' or a hyphen and you may find it is now free to buy. Very few visitors will come to your site by typing
in your site's name. Most will come via a search engine or a link. Make sure the .com version is for sale and better still, if all the versions are available to purchase
and the domain name is unique.
We are talking here about putting a lot of your time and effort into making and promoting your web site to make it successful and earn money.
It would be wrong to do all that work and not have total control over it.
So spend the money and buy a domain name to match your proposed web site.
There are many free domain names out there to be had. In fact they are sub-domains of a real domain name. Like www.mysite.hosting.com where
mysite is a sub-domain of www.hosting.com. As a sub-domain you are at the mercy of the owner of the domain name. If the owner of hosting.com shuts down his
site, you vanish too! If you want to move to another host you are unable to, without changing the name. Change the name and you vanish on the Net till you promote the new name all
over again.
So as I said above, buy your own domain name and have control over it.
The top domain is .com and is more expensive to buy than most others. It is also the favorite of Google. A .com will usually rank higher on a search results
page than a country domain, like a .co.uk or .co.ca web site.
Buy your domain name from a company that gives you full rights to the name. Avoid some cheaper registrars who hold the name themselves and let you use the
name. Often this occurs when you buy hosting and a domain name is included 'free'. If later you wish to change your host you may find that you have to pay a penalty to keep the
domain name. If the host goes bankrupt you could loose your name. Again, you are lacking control over your domain name.
Much better to purchase a domain name from a company like Easily who will
administer your domain name and remind you when it is due for renewal. This is important as after two years it is all too easy to forget to extend ownership of the name and
someone else could purchase your name and benefit from all your hard work promoting your site.
Once you have a host for your domain name you can log in to Easily to
administer your name and change the A records to point to your host server IP address. Initially the A records will point to Easily but you can 'add a new A record' and enter your
new IP address supplied by your hosting company. Then 'edit' > 'delete' the old A record.
I also add an A record for mail.yourname.com. and webmail.yourname.com. at the same IP address (which will be in the form ###.###.###.### or say
211.126.78.46). Remember the dot after the .com - it works better that way.
You can also 'point' the DNS (Domain Name Server) to your new host but that takes longer to propagate round the world.
At the moment, a .com domain name will cost £24.99 or $30 for 2 years
