Promoting Your Web Site
So you have made a really interesting web site? Who is going to visit it?
Well they won't just visit by chance. You will need to promote it. How? How do I get traffic to my website?
Make Your Site Friendly to Search Engines
When your site is finished and you have checked the spelling, grammar and composition, checked that all the external and internal links work - only then
should you apply to have your site 'spidered' or indexed by search engines and directories.
Make sure you include in the head of each page these, <tags> with your own words to replace my italics:-
title A keyword rich short description of the page /title
meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"
meta NAME="keywords" CONTENT="keywords, of this page, separated, by commas"
meta NAME="description" CONTENT="Similar description to the title "
meta NAME="robots" CONTENT="FOLLOW,INDEX"
It is too easy to forget to change the meta tags on each page to match the new content and <meta> tags are still used by many search engines to gather
data about a page.
All graphics should have Alternate Text using descriptive keywords.
Which Search Engine to Submit to?
According to the statistics on my web sites, 81.7% of all traffic comes from search engines and Google accounts for 93.4%! So forget paying a Search Engine
Optimisation (SEO) site to submit your masterpiece to hundreds of search engines. Submit your site to Google yourself here. Take time to select a few key words that are descriptive of your site and put them in the 'Comments:' box.
The other crucial place to submit your site is to Dmoz.org, the Open Directory Project. Drill down through
the descriptive headings till you come to the area that best fits your site's content then click 'Suggest URL'.
Carefully read all the information on the next page and note the comment... 'Descriptions of sites should describe the content of the site concisely and
accurately. They should not be promotional in nature.' It is better to take care and compose your description on your computer and check it for spelling before
submission.
Be aware that the power of Dmoz is that all submissions are checked by editors before acceptance. Yes, real human beings and not robots! Therefore it takes
time to be accepted but the quality of Dmoz.org is so good that the Open Directory is used by all the top search engines to update their indices.
Forums
First check if is allowed by your forum then put your site's URL into your signature. This usually is in your Profile 'back office' and takes the form similar
to:-

Link URL: http://www.hillofcash.com/promote_site.htm
with your own text in place of my italics.
If you write interesting posts and do not spam the members they may visit your site to see what you have to say. You also gain a back-link to your
site.
Exchange Links With Similar Websites
Both sites will benefit from a mutual link especially if it is a natural text link in the body of the page where the content of both websites is
complimentary.
Avoid a page full of just URL's that have no content.
Purchased Traffic
Do not use bought click-throughs if you are showing Google Adsense ads. They do not allow paid clicks and it is up to them how they interpret it so best not
to raise the question.
